The “Look Inside” feature of Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a powerful marketing tool if your book has a powerful opening. I don’t know how many books I have purchased because of the opening. Conversely, I have looked at so many and thought, “Oh, my, she/he can’t write.” That may sound like a condescending attitude, but with zillions of books published each year and the added ease of “Look Inside,” our books better start with a hook.

When Members of the Cast was released, the print version had the “Look Inside” feature, and the Kindle version didn’t. KDP suggests the author wait 8 days for “Look Inside” to appear. After eight days, I hoped the fault was in that I originally set March 15 as the release date and moved it to March 3rd. “Look Inside” didn’t appear on the Ides of March, and I wrote to KDP Customer Support.

In a couple of hours, I had a reply from KDP Customer Support: I have reported this issue to our Technical Support team for investigation. I’ll contact you with more information as soon as possible. The next morning the little “Look Inside” arrow appeared.

As we continue to discuss formatting books for KDP and other “storefronts,” I will be looking at formatting for “Look Inside.” The Kindle “Look Inside” for Members of the Cast is a bit clunky.

I spent my life teaching 6th graders. We have always been involved in church. Now I spend my days in an old stone house, wandering our four acres, and writing.
