Members of the Cast did very well in its first year. Well, according to my metrics, it did well. It sold regularly and received excellent reviews.
The Ship from Wolfskill is a departure from the high school “unpopular girl in a new school” trope, stepping into steampunk-ish, western dystopian adventure. I did extensive critique partner work, had beta readers, and the book is in good shape.
So, I published it using the same book launch techniques I used for Members of the Cast. I sent e-mails and posted on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
While the book has been selling, the response has been nothing like Members of the Cast. So, to what can I lay the blame for this situation?
1. Friends and other strangers bought the first book out of courtesy.
2. A dystopian steampunk-ish western adventure doesn’t interest folk.
3. With the millions of KDP books on the market, this is normal.
Are 1, 2 & 3 correct? I don’t know. I do know I am going to continue to do what I do. I will finish the Levitrite Trilogy, write new books, and work on my platform.
