Members of the Cast is a successful book. It is almost two years old, and I have enjoyed book sales being reported. I fear that after one year and nine months, the novel arrived in the still waters I read about in elementary school.
The history books told of the doldrums and how Magellian’s sailors languished there, hoping for a breeze. I gazed at blue map seas, dreaming of old sailing ships, marveling over scurvy, glad that orange trees surrounded the school.
The doldrums are caused by trade winds coming together, causing a lull near the equator. Trade winds were named such because trading ships followed their flow, sailing with a following wind. I self-published Members of the Cast, but the word trade is not lost on me. Trade publishing (often called “traditional” publishing) has brought books to us for hundreds of years.
Amazon is not a traditional publisher, but they are a trade publisher. Amazon publishes more books than all the other companies combined. As Amazon “trades” my book, caught in the doldrums, perhaps new winds are coming. I watch the sluggish sales, longing for it to cross through the doldrums into fresh winds that cause its sails to billow and fill.
Because I believe in the book—love the book—I am having an audiobook recorded. I recently read along as the sample narration brought the scenes to life, and I fell in love with the characters again. It’s a wonderful book and deserves to cross over into fresh seas. I don’t see the stubby ships of Magellan butting the waves; I see the sharp bow of a windjammer cutting the sea.
