In our culture, we are taught to be self-effacing. However, in this Chatty Blog, I’m bragging a bit.

Members of the Cast (MOTC) was published two years and one day ago. I have other works (WIPs) and have published The Ship from Wolfskill, a steampunk-ish novel. But MOTC has stayed dear to my heart.

Today, I clicked the “Publish” button at Findaway Voices. I set the publication date as March 4th, 2023, but I have no idea when it will be available from the 46 audiobook vendors in the Findaway distribution list. (Audiobook popularity is growing rapidly.)

I selected Shelley Reece to narrate the book and listened to every chapter. I selected music for the Opening and closing credits. Shelley began and finished on time. Her performance is touching.

I had not read the book from beginning to end for two years, and it has held up well. I laughed and cried. At times, I said, “Good Job George.” (GJG) After a particularly moving chapter, I told Ruth, “I can write!” And I can. The book proves that. Parts are lyrical.

I have no idea when I will break even on the audiobook version, but hearing my characters come to life with voice and emotion was like reading the book with new eyes. Shelley asked many questions about the characters, read the whole book before recording, and marked up the manuscript in preparation. Her interpretation of lines delivered, the tenor of scenes, and the arc of Margo’s growth shed new light on my characters. The “cast” came to life in new ways, and I reveled in each moment.

I don’t know if you commute, but the audiobook version of Members of the Cast will make your ride breeze by. (Also, while waiting at the doctor’s office.) I offer two warnings. First, don’t listen to the chapter “Tears” while driving. It brings the meaning of a veil of tears home. Second, leave a few minutes early. I don’t want anyone “written up” for being late because they sat in the parking lot to finish a chapter.

I am glad I chose to have an audiobook created. I will probably listen to the whole book again. I am offering the audiobook for eight dollars through March 2023. Tell your friends.

I spent my life teaching 6th graders. We have always been involved in church. Now I spend my days in an old stone house, wandering our four acres, and writing.
