Cover Dilemma

My new book is called Whitney & Freddy a Boyfriend Dilemma. Whitney isn’t the only one who has a dilemma.

The wonderful Abigail Silver (X @silverabby84) is my cover guru. She’s a real artis, but doesn’t want to be in the cover business. And I’m determined to do my own cover. This means learning, well sorta learning, Gimp. I have become YouTube Certified with many Gimp tools.

You may wonder, George have you ever considered hiring an artist to create your covers? Yes. One of my five covers is 100% created by a commissioned artist, and there is nothing wrong with it—but I may change it. What is in my head is hard to communicate to an artist.

For my new release, I went to FreePix and found a “Whitney.” I needed short black hair, blue eyes, busty, and high school age to match the book plot. This search took forever, but I found a picture, and it was free.

The picture is sorta short black-haired. She’s wearing a cowl neck sweater (Not the fashion in 1965), and her eyes are brown. Removing the background is one step I am good at. Then, I tried to skinny her up in the back and trimmed her bustline. The result was a Whitney that would never wear a sweater like that; she tries to minimize. Abby took one look and said, “No.”

So I gave Whitney more breast reduction, got rid of the cowl and earrings, and tried for blue eyes. (Don’t look too close. Even though I’m YouTube certified, I am terrible with some Gimp techniques.) In other pictures, she is sitting on a log, bracing herself, so I lowered her shoulder.

Today, I gave Whitney a haircut. This is about the best I can do. She is looking over her shoulder (guys make comments) and, in my mind, looks uncomfortable.

We won’t even go into how much time I spent on Freddy. I even gave him a new head!

I spent my life teaching 6th graders. We have always been involved in church. Now I spend my days in an old stone house, wandering our four acres, and writing.
