Graestone is a stone house built in 1936. It was originally a wooden TB sanitarium, one of many taking advantage of the Colfax rarified air.

Graestone in the Summer

The sanitarium burned to the ground, leaving only the foundation. The house was built of shot rock from the Empire Mine in Grass Valley.

We looked for a home along the Gold Country towns in Northern California for seven years. When Ruth found a new listing for Graestone, we wandered the four acres and house for two and a half hours, said a prayer on the front lawn, and signed the papers. We have never looked back.
