Have you noticed that two events that occurred simultaneously are warped in our time memory? One may seem like it was yesterday, yet an event happening the same year seems like it occurred eons ago.Today, I found that the distance of years disappears in time, bringing that “yesterday” to now.

This evening, I used my father’s pipe cutter to cut tubing that was ruined when Ruth’s hoop house collapsed in the snow last December. I didn’t oil the tool; I just pulled it out of a box it had been in since 2010 when I sold my parent’s house. I don’t remember when it wasn’t around, so it must be over 70 years old.

I went round and round, twisting the handle a half turn each turn. When the first tube “ticked,” I knew I was close, and the tube fell away. I cut five more tubes, and Ruth was pleased.

As I walked back to the red barn, I was in a reverie. I thought, “This old tool did the job perfectly. I’ll tell Da…” Father died in 2008. I wouldn’t be calling Father, but I had a moment of pleasure, knowing he would be pleased.

There it is—time. I walked back to the house, feeling very close, looking at the trees, thinking he would like this place, and saying, “Hey,” to my dad.

I spent my life teaching 6th graders. We have always been involved in church. Now I spend my days in an old stone house, wandering our four acres, and writing.
