Getting ready for the time change was easy at our house. The bedroom clock switched to Standard Time three weeks early. I didn’t ask it to do this. It just changed. Apparently, the satellite it is accessing isn’t up to date.

Not to be outdone, a clock in the fireside room, off the kitchen, decided to switch a week ago. I looked at it carefully, and it is not an atomic clock. It turns out a low battery can also cause a slowdown. For unknown reasons, the battery healed, and it kept time reasonably well for a week.

When the grand moment for time change came, we were ready. When clocks in the house have a mind of their own, I’m sure my circadian rhythms were in tune with the new time reality.

I, for one, am happy for Standard Time. I was fatigued with the sun coming up after 7 am. Another month of this, the sun wouldn’t get up before 8 am. With the time change, the sun goes down early, giving me a long evening when I don’t feel guilty about not being outside pruning, watering, or moving things from place to place.

I spent my life teaching 6th graders. We have always been involved in church. Now I spend my days in an old stone house, wandering our four acres, and writing.
